
“The intrigue was that this engine (the Mercedes-Benz 500I) was for one race, and then it was gone,” Gurss said in a phone interview. Major players in the story include legendary racing owner Roger Penske, Mario Illien and the late Paul Morgan, who came together to design and manufacture the engine, nicknamed “The Beast.” “Beast,” the fourth book by Gurss, was released last month and details the story behind the Ilmor-Penske pushrod race engine unveiled for the 1994 Indianapolis 500, an engine that was used for only one race after being cloaked in secrecy in the days leading up to the 500.

So when the Shawnee Heights and Washburn graduate, who coauthored two books that made it on the New York Times best-seller list, says he believes the recently-released “Beast” is the best work of his career, it's saying a mouthful.
